Dear Friend,

I am working on housing issues this morning with urgency. I will share more about that housing work and COVID vaccine distribution after the May Board meetings.

As I continue that work, I want to share with you that I have endorsed Hala Ayala for Lieutenant Governor. I do so because I believe the elections that culminate on June 8th are very important choices for Arlington's future and affect our ability to pass and implement laws consistent with our shared ideals.

I am proud to endorse Hala Ayala. I met Hala when she was first running for the House of Delegates in 2017. Her advocacy for Medicaid expansion based on her own experience fighting for her son made an immediate impression. In 2019, I hosted an event here in Arlington for Hala when she ran for re-election. She is authentic, hard-working, inspiring, and committed to equity. I endorse her wholeheartedly as the right choice in this election and the right person to move Virginia forward.

I respect those who disagree: there are other good candidates and I will support whoever wins the Democratic nomination in this race in addition to the campaigns for Governor and Attorney General. In those races I have endorsed Terry McAuliffe and Mark Herring. I see both as the best choices to serve and to ensure Democrats keep the House of Delegates. ([link removed] and [link removed])

As we make these choices, I believe it is important to consider: (1) the need to support women and candidates of color, (2) candidates positions on the issues, and (3) the best Democrat to win in general elections. Hala best meets that three part test in my view. She would be the first woman of color to win a statewide office in Virginia. She is hard working, a leader, and shares the ideals that led me to seek to serve Arlington. I also believe she is the best choice to help the ticket as a whole.

As you consider who to vote for in this election, I hope you will consider Hala and I hope that she earns your vote.
