John,
North Carolina is currently represented by eight Republicans and five Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives. But even though the state will gain a seat due to reapportionment, GOP leaders want to gerrymander the new maps so badly that North Carolinians will be left with one fewer Democrat in the House! Take a look at this screen grab from a local story:
|
Ever since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that federal courts can’t hear partisan gerrymandering cases, Republicans have been broadcasting their intentions to manipulate the maps as heavily as possible this year. Unless we fight back, it’s going to be 2011 on steroids.
That’s because Republicans need to flip just seven seats to take the majority in the House -- and according to the Carolina Journal, they could pick up almost all of them thanks to redistricting in North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Texas alone!
We’re getting ready to pressure redistricting officials to adopt fair maps this year, and when necessary we will support plaintiffs in lawsuits to protect the redistricting process from manipulation. But all of that work is possible thanks to support from people like you, and we’re running out of time to prepare!
If you’re able, will you make a donation to the NDRC today to help us stop Republicans from drawing themselves into the majority for the next decade?
