Time has weighed heavily on us since Trump became President and since Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court.
Yet, because of my many years of work with Trans women of color in detention facilities, I know how much endurance, guts, fire, and defiance it takes to overcome the enemies of justice and basic fairness. I have learned that the struggle for gender and all forms of reproductive justice requires continued action and sustained leadership from us. It is part of why I accepted a position on the Women’s March Board.
A year ago Women’s March and many partner organizations led tens of thousands of people in protest against Kavanaugh’s illegitimate Supreme Court confirmation. Today, we took to the streets to remind Brett Kavanaugh and his right-wing extremist supporters that we will not tolerate them pushing their dangerous agenda to roll back Roe v. Wade. On Tuesday, I’ll be back in action to continue to hold this administration’s feet to the fire when SCOTUS hears cases around protections for LGBTQ+ people.
We are at the Supreme Court today because we believe each other, we trust each other, and we know what’s at stake if we give up. So we won’t give up. As long as men like Kavanaugh and Trump hold the immense power to abuse women on one hand and dictate our lives and bodies with the other, women are not safe here.
They say we can’t always know what moments will turn the tides of history. Yet, movements of everyday people know that this means we have to make our play when opportunity beckons. Let’s continue to rise up and make history, together.
In endurance and resistance,
Isa Noyola
