Many Americans now know that private money--especially $400 million from Mark Zuckerberg--was one of many irregularities that plagued the 2020 election. In Texas, "Zuck bucks" helped Joseph Biden receive 1.4 million more votes than Hillary Clinton had in 2016--a 36 percent increase. What do elites gain from their philanthropy?
Some academics are taking a critical look at elite philanthropy, which they say "enables wealthy individuals to magnify their influence and connections, thereby exerting disproportionate control over social change." How has a billionaire you've never heard of tried to alter U.S. elections?
In 2015, the Wyss Foundation created a "communications hub" to shift the political debate so its donor's preferred policies would become law. The Hub Project had two aims: to bypass the legal ban on charities' intervening in elections and to hide the foreign donor behind the scheme, left-wing billionaire Hansjörg Wyss.
