Good news and bad news, John. First the good news: Thanks to your support, Democrats are going into redistricting in a much better position than in 2011.
But the bad news: Republicans still control redistricting in too many states, including four big ones -- Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and Texas. The Guardian reports that they are "extremely well positioned to draw districts that will give them an advantage both in their effort to reclaim control of the U.S. House in the 2022 midterms, and cement control over congressional seats for the next decade."
That makes our battle to block the GOP from manipulating the maps in these seat-rich states and others very, very urgent -- especially because with the release of the Census Bureau's apportionment numbers, redistricting is beginning NOW. Look, we know what the GOP's plan is. As A.G. Holder said, "power-hungry politicians will try to block fair maps at every turn." But we can beat them with our strategy of engaging the public in redistricting, analyzing the maps, supporting plaintiffs in lawsuits where appropriate, and making sure Republicans know we'll hold them accountable for their actions.
