[1]Alessandra Biaggi - Democrat for State Senate

Happy Mother’s Day, friends!

I am truly grateful for all the women role models in my life, and as a New
York State Senator, I am working every day to support policies that uplift
women both in the professional and domestic spheres.

Right now, one of the most pressing issues facing women is the economic
fallout of COVID-19. From February 2020 through April of this year, nearly
two million American women left the workforce completely.

Most of these women were forced to stop working, either because they were
laid off or because they lacked sufficient support to raise children and
work at the same time. And while there was a net gain of female workforce
participation in March, it fell once again in April.

This is a crisis, and the inequality that created it existed long before
COVID-19.

There are many steps we can take in the New York State government to
support gender equality. For example, I am supporting the Marshall Plan
for Moms, first started by the Founder of Women Who Code, Reshma Saujani.

To start, the plan “implements a short-term monthly payment to moms
depending on needs and resources.” It would mean passing more robust paid
family leave, affordable childcare and pay equity. And it would “establish
a task force to create a Marshall Plan for Moms.”

must explore a Marshall Plan for Moms who have been disproportionately
impacted by the COVID crisis.

For far too long, women have been forced to choose between their jobs and
their obligations to their families.

If we are to truly celebrate our mothers, today and every day, we must do
more than just pay lip service to the women who raised us — we need to
take action on this issue. That starts with making your voice heard.

Thank you for reading, and again, happy Mother’s Day — whether you’re
celebrating with your mom, your children, or any woman in your life who
has lent you support during a time of need.
