Happy Mother’s Day, John!
Today, we celebrate all the mothers, grandmothers, and parental figures who have made countless contributions and sacrifices for us.
From adapting to remote work, to navigating their children’s new online learning environment, this year especially I’m reminded of the strength and resilience of mothers.
The past year has had its share of hardships too. Many mothers have been out of work or struggling to make ends meet and keep food on the table throughout the pandemic.
It’s a situation I’m familiar with through my own experience as a young single mother. Raising two boys, I had to rely on food stamps to put food on the table and I even brought my kids with me to college classes because I couldn’t afford childcare.
Throughout it all, I looked to my own mother, Mildred P. Massey, for inspiration during difficult times. She grew up in the segregated South when very few African American women had access to education, housing, healthcare, and basic freedoms.
The sacrifices she made helped give me and my siblings a chance at a better life. And her commitment and resilience helped carry me through those difficult times as I navigated motherhood myself.
In Congress, I am always fighting in honor of my mother Mildred and mothers everywhere — not just on Mother’s Day, but every day. We can do so much more to give back to our mothers by securing equal pay, paid family leave, universal childcare, and reproductive rights.
Mothers can be caregivers and childcare workers, and the critical caregiving economy doesn't get the recognition it deserves. That's why we must work to ensure they are paid a living wage with benefits.
Take time today to thank your mother or another treasured mother figure in your life, or celebrate her legacy. We would not be where we are or who we are today without them. John, together we can continue making progress for mothers everywhere in honor of their immense sacrifices for all of us.
In solidarity,
— Barbara Lee
