Hi, it’s Nevada Joan Lee (aka Nevie), Susie’s daughter.
First, let me wish you and your family a Happy Mother’s Day! I hope you’re enjoying today relaxing, spending family time together or, if you’re like us, enjoying the outdoors.
My Mom doesn’t know that I’m writing to you but, I wanted to take this chance to show her how much my brother Cody and I appreciate and love her.
Growing up, she was there whenever we needed her to be and always made sure we were happy. She knew that it wouldn’t be easy to raise two kids while working full-time, but she did it anyway.
My mother taught me the importance of being independent and strong. I know it may sound cliché and all but I keep those values in the back of my head whenever things get tough or I need a little extra kick.
When my Mom told me that she was running for Congress, I was a little hesitant at first; this was a big change for our family that would require sacrifices from everyone. But, we knew that these sacrifices were a small price to pay in order to see my Mom do what she does best: serving our community.
I have to admit, campaigning was pretty fun for all of us. Being able to talk to neighbors, meet new people, and see people trust in my Mom as much as I do was awesome.
On the night of my Mom’s first election when we found out she won, one takeaway was particularly strong for me: women can run for office and they can win.
Channeling the same courage my mother showed, I decided to run for president of my own college Democrats chapter and won! Those values of independence and strength that she instilled in me at a young age really came through, too. (I’ll also never forget calling her that night to share the news and celebrate!)
There’s so many reasons why I’m thankful for my Mom today. This email isn’t even the tip of the iceberg but, I think it’s a pretty good place to start.
Happy Mother’s Day from our family to yours,
- Nevie
