John – Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms who are everyday heroes.

This past year has been particularly hard for women and moms everywhere. I have lived it firsthand like so many other working moms – the parents are trying to keep up, the kids are in virtual school, and we are all trying diligently to stay healthy.

This is exactly why we need mothers and women engaged in decision-making, working in government to set the policies that affect women and their families most.

Take the American Rescue Plan that was just signed into law. It will cut child poverty in half through the Child Care Tax Credit, save the struggling child care industry, and expand Medicaid coverage for mothers for a full year after childbirth, in addition to provisions that expand SNAP WIC for Women, Infants, and Children.

With my colleagues, I fought for these crucial benefits that will allow moms to not just survive paycheck to paycheck as we recover from the pandemic, but to afford necessities like food, rent, and medicine, and safe and affordable child care programs.

But we are just getting started. We have passed legislation like the Paycheck Fairness Act, to ensure equal pay for equal work, and reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act, and are fighting for key legislative priorities, including the Biden-Harris administration’s American Families Plan.

I am proud to use my experiences – as a working mom, who understands the realities of raising a child as a single mom – to advance policy that helps ALL moms and makes the lives of all our children better as a result.

Thank you for all you do, moms.

With love,

– Jahana
