John,
We talk a lot about how Republicans could gerrymander themselves into a near-permanent U.S. House majority. But we also need to talk about their gerrymandering of state legislative seats.
A little history: In 2011, Republicans drew the maps of 43 state legislative bodies with “extreme partisan gerrymandering.” As a result, even when they lost the statewide popular vote in states like Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, they still managed to hold onto power.
Now experts say that in 2021, the GOP could draw even more skewed maps in some states. In fact, they could draw themselves into legislative supermajorities, meaning that even if the state elects a Democratic governor, the Republican legislature could overturn the governor's vetoes -- including vetoes of voter suppression bills.
And a combination of gerrymandering and voter suppression would mean decades of unfair elections and an endless vicious cycle of Republicans hanging on to unearned power.
So John, it's essential that we're able to stop Republicans from manipulating state legislative districts. But with 99 state legislative bodies nationwide, that's a tall order.
