IWF is delighted to announce that Congresswoman Michelle Steel, who was elected last year to represent California’s 48th Congressional District, as the latest entry in our popular series of Champion Women profiles ([link removed]) .

Rep. Steel, who was born in South Korea and came to the United States in 1975, speaks three languages, and English is her third. People close to her advised that her accent might hold her back. But they were wrong.

Steel and her friend of more than 30 years, Rep. Young Kim, also elected to Congress from California last year, were in the spotlight recently as they issued a joint statement condemning violence against Americans of Asian decent. The congresswomen made the statement in the wake of the massage parlor mass shooting in Georgia.

Although Steel wasted no time in decrying anti-Asian racism, the South Korean-born congresswoman is second to none in admiration for her adopted country.

She told the Ripon Society Forum that the results of last year’s elections showed “that minorities who may look or speak differently from most not only have a place in this Republican Party, but can be elected to the United States Congress.”

She continued, “I’m a product of the American Dream: a first-generation immigrant who succeeded in this country and was given the honor to serve my community. I ran for Congress on my record of fighting for taxpayers and protecting public safety. I stuck to facts and common sense and worked hard to meet the residents of my district. In Congress, I’ll stick to my commonsense principles, seek to lower taxes, and reduce business regulations to help hard working Americans succeed.”

She is married to lawyer Shawn Steel, Republican National Committee member for California since 2008, whom she met on the tennis courts. The Steels have two adult daughters.

We know you will enjoy meeting this vivacious woman who has no problem being understood and learning about her family’s dramatic flight from communism.
