John,
Last month, we asked you: what issues should Katie tackle next on her whiteboard?
This week, we finally took some time to analyze the survey results and your answers. Here are a few things we’ve found:
- Climate change was one of the most-talked about—if not the most-talked about—issues on the survey. Katie is proud to serve on the Natural Resources Committee in Congress and is proud to press for urgent action to halt the climate crisis, and also focus on protecting our oceans, natural lands, and endangered species. With her whiteboard, she’s ready to hold polluters accountable in the same way she holds billionaire CEOs and unqualified government officials accountable.
- Debt, particularly around student loans, was also another big point of concern. Student loan debt is a multi-generational crisis. During her time in Congress, Katie’s worked to crack down on abusive debt collectors and predatory student loan agreements.
- Finally, the issue of affordable childcare was something that came up as a huge point of concern on nearly every single response to the survey. We’re right to feel that way, John—we haven’t adjusted how much working parents can set aside pre-tax for childcare since the 1980s. The pandemic has only exacerbated the issues around affordable childcare and working parents. And as one of the only single moms of young kids in Congress, Katie knows how important it is that we invest in our children.
We wanted to also extend a big thank you to survey respondents for taking the time to share your thoughts with us. And if you weren’t able to take the survey, that’s okay—we’re glad you’re a part of our grassroots team!
And as we’ve said before, John: this work isn’t just about Katie’s vision. It’s about the hundreds of thousands of supporters like you. Thank you for continuing to share that vision with us.
More soon,
Katie Porter HQ
