Help us safeguard independent redistricting commissions » [[link removed]]

FIRST → The people of Arizona voted for an independent redistricting commission (IRC) to ensure a fair redistricting process.
THEN → That independence was undermined when the commission made a hiring decision on a 3-2, split vote -- hiring a political operative as its Executive Director in the first-ever non-unanimous vote for the commission’s leader.
NOW → They’ve contracted a mapping firm that has a history of being involved in manipulated maps that undermined communities of color. The firm has defended maps that were deemed unfair in courts across the country -- and the firm’s president’s testimony has even been rejected in court.

The people entrusted to help create fair maps should have a track record of creating transparency and fairness -- not one of controversy and partisanship.

What’s happening in Arizona is exactly why we need to keep the pressure on and make sure the commission remains independent. Will you make a donation right now to help us safeguard the independence of redistricting commissions in Arizona and across the country?

A.G. Holder is right. We need to fight back against these attempts to undermine a fair map drawing process. Last year we saw a Republican-controlled legislature successfully weaken a redistricting commission in Missouri. Now we’re seeing partisan manipulation in Arizona. Some folks are deploying a “by any means necessary” strategy to damage the independence of these commissions.

More than 1,000 of our supporters submitted public comments to the Arizona commission and urged them not to hire the controversial mapping firm -- but the commission decided to ignore our calls for qualified, reliable experts and consultants. They seem to think that if they give lip service to transparency, we won’t hold them accountable when they make blatantly partisan hires that undermine the legitimacy of the commission. That’s where they’re wrong.

Can we count on you to make a donation right now to support our plans to achieve fair maps in Arizona and across the country? Your donation will help us mobilize folks to take action and demand a fair redistricting process.
