Dear MoveOn member,
Ever since Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court, we knew this day would come. And now it's here.
The Supreme Court just took up the case that could end Roe v. Wade.1
The case involves a Louisiana law that would force nearly every abortion clinic in the state to shut down. It's nearly identical to a Texas law that the Supreme Court struck down on a 5-4 vote just three years ago.
But that was before Kavanaugh replaced Anthony Kennedy. Now, the right-wing extremists have a majority in the Supreme Court to reverse the previous decision and gut Roe.
We're getting ready to fight on all fronts to keep abortion legal and accessible. Will you donate $3 to help MoveOn launch an emergency campaign to save Roe?
Yes, I'll donate to help save Roe v. Wade.
The case going before the Supreme Court now is the culmination of a decades-long strategy by the radical right to effectively ban abortion by simply making it unavailable. They've perfected the strategy of forcing clinics to close by imposing an impossible web of medically unnecessary regulations and restrictions.2
When Texas passed a similar clinic shutdown bill, it left the state with fewer than 10 abortion providers in a state of 28 million people.3 But in a 2016 case called Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt, the Supreme Court threw out the Texas clinic shutdown bill as a violation of Roe.4
Now, just three years later, the Supreme Court is poised to overturn that precedent. If they do, Louisiana might not have any abortion providers left at all, and other red states are sure to follow the same roadmap.
Republicans will say that they aren't really overturning Roe, they're just allowing restrictions. But if there are no abortion clinics, there's no access to abortion. Period.
Here's what we need to do to fight back:
Let's be clear: the Supreme Court is on the verge of gutting or perhaps even overturning Roe entirely. This is a 5 alarm fire. We are facing the end of safe and legal abortion—which is a matter of life and death. Will you chip in $3?
Yes, I'll donate to help save Roe v. Wade.
Thanks for all you do.
