“Black Lives Matter. It is time our justice system recognized they do too.”
– DAGA Co-chairs, AG Maura Healey (MA) and AG Aaron Ford (NV)
Friend, the man responsible for the murder of George Floyd was held accountable in court last month – but the pursuit of justice is still far from over. That’s why DAGA is putting pressure on the Senate to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
The case is clear for comprehensive and holistic reform of our justice system – one that is currently rife with abuses of power, racial profiling, and unequal treatment of Black lives.
Black lives matter – and we can’t rest until our justice system operates with that truth front and center across our nation in every state and in every community. That requires the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which grants state Attorneys General the authority to hold local law enforcement agencies accountable under federal civil rights law.
If passed, Dem AGs will have the power to step in when there are signs of misconduct, injustice, or bigotry from local law enforcement. As we reform the American justice system at every level, safeguards like these are crucial to defending Black life and building a safer, more equal future for our communities.
Democratic Attorneys General are more than ready to act, just as Minnesota AG Keith Ellison did in the successful prosecution of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.
This bill equips all state AGs with the authority and resources they need to play a bigger, more direct role in achieving justice for our communities.
Dem AGs across the country have already taken aggressive action in their own communities, but we still need the Senate to lock in these reforms at the federal level.
Nobody should be treated as less than equal in our criminal justice system, but that’s been the reality for Black Americans and other communities of color for more than 400 years. Now, it’s on all of us to demand swift action from the Senate.
