[2]Dream Corps
John, this Mother’s Day is different for all of us.
Some of us are reuniting with our families for the first time in more than a year, and others are grieving mothers, grandmothers, and loved ones lost to COVID-19.
Families impacted by incarceration are also trying to move forward, despite the many challenges in their path. Over the last year, nearly 1 in 5 people behind bars has been infected by COVID-19, and vaccine rollout for people behind bars has been delayed and often inconsistent. For mothers returning home, reentry resources have been strained or put on hold, creating an extra toll on families already struggling.
Over half of all women in prison are mothers, and will spend today separated from their families. That’s why Dream Corps is working to make this Mother’s Day a day of action, by fighting for change across all 50 states.
Here are 3 things we’re doing to help:
In partnership with We 2 Matter, our ‘100 Women Matter’ campaign launched today. Over the next year, we’ll connect 100 formerly incarcerated women with resources to reenter society, like housing assistance, job training, counseling, career placement, education resources, and more. Know a formerly incarcerated mother who could use support? Email
[email protected].
Our Dignity For Incarcerated Women campaign, led by formerly incarcerated women, has passed reform for women behind bars in 12 states. In Pennsylvania, our team has helped shape bipartisan legislation ready to be introduced this month to stop the shackling of expecting mothers and restore basic human rights to women behind bars. We’re working to relieve fines and fees for women still chained to the justice system through state-owed debt. Fines and fees stack on interest and keep families impacted by incarceration stuck in a cycle of poverty. It’s changemakers like you that help us carry this fight forward. On behalf of our entire team at Dream Corps, we’re thankful for your support and wish you a wonderful Mother’s Day surrounded by those you love.
With gratitude,
— The Dream Corps Team
