John,
Earlier this week, Jamaal asked you to share stories of teachers that have changed your life in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week. Hundreds of you wrote in with touching stories about how teachers, coaches, and counselors have made a meaningful difference in your lives to this day.
Now, as we begin to close out Teacher Appreciation Week, we wanted to share a few of those stories below:
“Mrs. Anderson was my 5th Grade teacher. She was a former opera singer who went into teaching. She took a small group of us who were strong in math and taught us algebra all year. I loved it...I’m 70 year old, and I remember and love her as if I had just been in her class yesterday!”
“Mrs. Reed, my first grade teacher, taught me how to read. She has my unending gratitude.”
“Mr. Pelster was my high school art teacher. He taught me to be completely focused and dedicated to exploring the deepest realms of my imagination. Thank you, Mr. Pelster, for teaching me how to truly be alive and how to share my imagination, my visualizations, my love, my compassion for healing with everyone.”
“Mr. Frank Ortolani, Coffeyville Community College, Kansas, American History Professor. He made history come alive. Such detail. He motivated me to also be a history teacher in Middle School and later in higher education. Thank you.”
“My middle school choir teacher Mrs. Heino always made herself available to all of her students. No matter who we were or what we were going through...she listened to us and was able to validate our emotions, which was a powerful resource to kids who needed adults to hear them and meet them where they’re at.”
“Ms. Ungerman was my high school 11th grade history teacher. She opened my eyes to US and world history when she made us realize our role in effecting change.”
“Oddly, it was a Guidance Teacher that changed my life. He let me know that there was a great big world out there, and most importantly he believed in my ability to go far and wide. Which I did. Saved my life quite frankly.”

These stories demonstrate over and over, John: teachers have changed and saved millions of lives, and their work is what love looks like in action. As we continue our fight to transform our nation and to center and prioritize care in our economy, we must continue to listen to, support, and uplift our teachers and educators.
Jamaal is one of the few educators in Congress today, and he brings a solutions-oriented approach to leadership based around empathy, active listening, and care — the kind of leadership that’s greatly needed in Washington.
And since he took office, Jamaal has been working closely with other members of Congress and the White House to ensure that the progressive perspective is being heard and our educators, children, and families are prioritized.
John, it’s time we come together to uplift the life-changing work that educators have done for our youth, especially during such uncertain times. Please add your name in support of teachers and educators as we fight for a better and more equitable education system for all.
