What do you call a country whose elected officials use their power to keep
people from voting? Not a democracy. 

In a democracy, when you run for office and you lose, you’ve got to win people
back. Not prevent them from voting. Laws that suppress voting are disgraceful,
autocratic, and -- when the communities being targeted are historically
disenfranchised -- racist and reprehensible. It must stop now.

I’m doing everything I can to pass the For The People Act -- a landmark bill
that will protect voting rights, limit the influence of money in politics and
secure our elections from foreign interference.

Just in case any of my GOP colleagues are reading this email, here’s a reminder:
in a democracy, you want more voting, not less. 

We can’t erase the shame of actions like the GOP’s attempt to disallow early
voting on Sundays. But we can make new, better, laws that say a right to vote is
one of our country’s core values, and nothing will come between the American
people and their absolute right to make their voices heard in elections. 

The For the People Act will require all states to offer mail-in ballots and 15
days of early voting at a minimum. It will call for more voter registration --
like same-day and online -- and an independent commission to draw congressional
districts in order to prevent gerrymandering.
