Florida takes Important Step to Strengthen Voter Integrity

WATCH: Tenney Discusses Dangers of the For the People Act As co-chair of the House Election Integrity Caucus, I've been calling for stronger election laws across the country to preserve the integrity of the ballot box and ensure every legally cast ballot is counted. Just this week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a comprehensive election reform bill into law that strengthens the integrity and transparency of Florida's elections. This bill is a bold and necessary piece of legislation that improves voter ID requirements, bans ballot harvesting and vote trafficking, and enhances safeguards to ensure only legal votes count. These commonsense reforms should serve as a model for states across the nation. A national takeover of our elections and one size fits all mandates from Washington are not the answer and it is imperative that we push back on dangerous proposal's like H.R. 1.

Support for Claudia's Burma Bill is Growing This week, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing on the crisis in Burma. I was able to speak with the Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the UN about my recently introduced resolution calling for a UN Arms Embargo against the Burmese military. He confirmed that imposing a UN arms embargo against the Burmese military is a critical and necessary step in the right direction. With more than 4,000 Burmese refugees living in our community, I'll continue fighting on behalf of them and their families. Action must be taken to end the unlawful military control in Burma. Border Update: Offering Real Solutions Deportations fell to a record breaking low in April because the Biden Administration has told law enforcement officials to stop enforcing the law. At a time when there’s a crisis on our Southern Border, this is the wrong decision. I've been to the border and have had extensive discussions with law enforcement about real solutions to this crisis. These include: Restore the Executive Orders that President Biden reversed Complete construction of the border wall Deploy 21st century technology along the border Provide greater resources and flexibility to border patrol We need leadership and commonsense solutions that will tackle this humanitarian, public health, and national security crisis.

The PRO Act is Harmful to Small Businesses WATCH: PRO Act stifles innovation and economic progress for small biz Congressional Democrats and President Biden have been pushing for the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act to become law. This week in a House Small Business Committee hearing, I highlighted how the PRO Act actually hurts workers and reduces their rights. It was great to hear from Gus Bruner, the President and Project Executive for Caliagua Inc., who discussed how this legislation is harmful to our small businesses, innovation and to our economic recovery. I opposed this legislation when it came up for a vote in Congress earlier this year. I was glad to hear from other small business owners directly, who shared the harmful impacts this bill would have if passed into law.

Community Development Block Grants: Community Development Block Grants are targeted and provide critical resources to communities across Upstate New York. This program is a lifeline for millions and I was happy to join my colleagues in the House to support this program. Community Health Centers: Community Health Centers provide quality and affordable care across our region. Over the last year, they’ve continued their services and have played a significant role in our all-in effort to defeat this pandemic.

Hospital Roundtable I spoke with leaders from UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital, Rome Health, Lourdes Hospital, the Healthcare Association of New York State, Community Memorial Hospital, and Oneida Health during a roundtable discussion this week. It was great to hear from them. As we all know, this has been a hard year, and our hospitals have been there to get us through the pandemic. I will always fight to ensure our hospitals have the resources to continue delivering quality and affordable care to New Yorkers.

I was so pleased to see Old School Bar and Grill re-opened and cut the ribbon on their new location in Utica this week. A huge congratulations to owners Jeff and Jessica Reilly of East Utica and Brandon and Lexi Betrand of Rome on this exciting moment! It's so great to see lifelong New Yorkers stay local and grow our economy right here at home. Congratulations to you all!

Art Competition Winners to be Announced Next Week It was great to review the nearly 100 submissions from across our region for the 2021 Congressional Art Competition. We had so many fantastic works of art submitted from students artists. I enjoyed meeting with the judges to narrow down the finalists. Stay tuned - we will be announcing the winners next week!
