People For Member, Across the country the Far Right is out to attack our voting rights – and our fight to defend our democracy is intensifying; whether it's organizing in Senate target states or supporting the boycott of Home Depot led by Rev. Timothy McDonald and other Black clergy – we must keep up the pressure. Just this week, Florida Governor and Trump protégé Ron DeSantis signed a bill that would make voting less accessible and more restrictive. DeSantis’s actions follow just weeks after Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also signed into law a bill designed to reduce voter turnout and make voting less accessible – even going so far as to ban the distribution of refreshments for voters waiting in line (sometimes for hours) to vote! More than 360 bills just like these have been introduced in state legislatures in 47 states across the country. We have the power to stop these and future attacks – but only if the Senate acts quickly. Disgruntled by 2020 election losses, Republicans across the country have shown indifference to the outcry over their brazen attempts to make voting less accessible for millions of people across the country. They know the only way they can regain some of their lost power is to make sure fewer people are able to vote in the next election, and they are expediting their voter suppression bills as quickly as they can. Currently, there is a bill before the U.S. Senate, the For the People Act (S. 1), that would prevent the worst voter suppression provisions from taking effect – but without urgent action by Senate Democrats, the bill is destined to fail when it comes up for a vote. The Senate filibuster, an archaic procedural rule in the Senate that has been used in the past to block landmark civil rights legislation, now stands in the way of this historic democracy-strengthening bill. We must DEMAND an end to the filibuster so that these democracy-strengthening measures and other important bills can be passed. The Senate must act with the urgency the current situation requires; if they fail to do so, we can expect to see the continued erosion of one of our most fundamental rights, our right to vote, and with it – our democracy. Thanks for all that you do, Zach, People For the American Way
