Dear John,
It's all over the news and our social media feeds: Offshore wind. There are a lot of conflicting messages in the media right now, and many of our members are asking for guidance.
We're here to tell you, unequivocally, that MCV supports Gov. Janet Mills' thoughtful approach to offshore wind development. Here's why:
Fighting the climate crisis is a shared responsibility, and we can do our part by harnessing the power of wind right here off the coast of Maine in a responsible way. Offshore wind will create hundreds of good-paying, union jobs in Maine and we applaud the state for working in partnership with our fishermen and coastal communities to address concerns.
And we need your help to build for support offshore wind in Maine. As opponents spread disinformation, environmentalists, scientists, labor groups, advocates and business groups need our grassroots support to ensure offshore wind becomes a reality to help reduce our emissions and reliance on carbon-emitting energy sources.
The Gulf of Maine is 36,000 square miles, and we believe there is plenty of room for clean energy, fishing, recreation and other activities to coexist.
We applaud the governor's ten-year moratorium on the development of offshore wind in the waters off of Maine that are the most productive for lobstering. This extra time will allow for all Mainers to have their voices heard.
Combining clean energy opportunities, like offshore wind, and good-paying union jobs is a win for the State of Maine.
And when it comes down to it, our state simply can't achieve the goals set forth in Gov. Mills' Climate Action Plan without offshore wind. It's time for Maine to take the lead on offshore wind technology and rise to the challenge — but we need your help.
Thanks for everything you do,
Will
