As a country, India has set a record for new coronavirus infections and deaths. Makeshift crematoriums are being erected in parking lots. Nearly every family in India is experiencing the loss of relatives and friends.

India is reporting nearly 400,000 COVID cases and 3,500 deaths a day. These numbers are believed to significantly underestimate the actual infections and suffering and are still higher than any other country during its peak.

The health care infrastructure has collapsed under the pressure of the second coronavirus wave with an insidious new variant. Hospital beds are impossible to find. And oxygen supplies are scarce or nonexistent. And those who are least likely to receive lifesaving care are, as always, the poor. The sick are dying en masse.

The crisis is just unfolding. India has less than 100,000 intensive care beds and 50,000 ventilators. It is projected that the country will need 340,000 beds and more than 700,000 ventilators by the middle of May.

The COVID crisis in India is a devastating setback for the entire world. As the new variants spread to the surrounding countries, cases are surging in Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. This is a global issue and India needs our support to survive this crisis.
