This week marks the beginning of AAPI Heritage Month — a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions Asian American and Pacific Islander Americans make to the fabric of our society.

Nevada is home to vast Asian American populations with rich and celebrated cultures, and I am proud to serve as a representative from such a diverse cross section of our country.

The recognition of AAPI Heritage Month is particularly poignant this year, as the COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to an increase in hate crimes perpetrated against Asian Americans. Following dangerous rhetoric from divisive leaders, it is all the more important that we recognize and honor the endless positive contributions Asian Americans make to our country every single day.

Many of my Republican colleagues have turned a blind eye to these heinous trends over the past year. So I want my constituents to know that I unequivocally stand with you as we work to Stop AAPI Hate.

Just last month, the U.S. Senate passed the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, a critical piece of legislation aimed at reducing hate crimes in the United States. The bill will come to the House of Representatives next, and I am proud to support this important bill.

Let’s work together to make this month not just one of celebration, but also one of dedication to the effort to end anti-AAPI racism. Together, we can build a society that uplifts, supports and defends everyone, and I am proud to stand with you in that mission today.
