Friend of Israel,

This week, negotiations resumed in Vienna over the potential return of the United States and Iran to compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal.

The negotiations have been complicated both by ongoing Iranian violations of the JCPOA and sanctions imposed on Iranian entities due to their human rights, terrorism, and missile activity. Iran is reportedly demanding sanctions relief for those entities as part of the JCPOA talks.

A senior State Department official

indicated the administration was prepared to lift any sanctions inconsistent with a return to the JCPOA, implying terrorism-related sanctions could be lifted.

Such a move would raise serious questions.

- Why are we lifting important terrorism sanctions when we always asserted our right to impose them under the JCPOA?

- How do we hope to discourage Iranian terrorism if we lift sanctions on those supporting and facilitating the terrorism?

- Will these entities receive immunity in the event they support terrorism in the future? These and other fundamental questions should be part of our national discussion as the United States considers returning to the JCPOA.

Below are more news items we are following this week.

Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander-in-Chief: Israel Can Be Destroyed in One Operation

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander-in-chief bragged about recent attacks against Israel in an interview on Wednesday.

Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami, head of the IRGC, pointed to a string of incidents over the last several months and took credit for them.

Salami listed his assessment of Israeli weaknesses and vulnerabilities, as well as recent Iranian attacks against the Jewish state.

Why it matters: Iran doesn't hide its intentions. The regime continues to plan and execute attacks against America and our allies throughout the region.

- American security assistance to Israel ensures that Israel can defend itself, by itself, against Iranian-backed terror. The way forward: America must make clear to Iran that it cannot achieve sanctions relief by threats and raising tensions.
