Hey John,
My name is Chanté Davis, I’m a leader with Sunrise Houston, and I’ve lived through too many climate disasters to count.
When I was two years old, my family fled our home in New Orleans as Hurricane Katrina came barreling in to the Gulf Coast. We moved to Houston, and for a while things seemed stable — until Hurricane Harvey flooded my home and shattered any hope of normalcy. And just this year, my family and friends struggled to stay warm as the Texas freeze wiped out power for millions across the state.
It’s hard living from disaster to disaster, never knowing when the next storm will strike or whether I’ll have to evacuate to a new city. For far too long we’ve been hanging on for dear life, struggling from crisis to crisis, while fossil fuel executives and the politicians they throw money at profit off of our suffering. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
That’s why, starting on Monday, I’m marching over 400 miles from New Orleans to Houston with other young people from across the Gulf South. But we can’t do this alone, John.

I believe that a better world is possible. We could thrive right now if the government cared about our lives and took bold action.
Our movement has already made Biden bend: From a F- climate plan to a 3 trillion dollar proposal to address the climate crisis, rooted in justice. But it’s not enough. As it stands, Biden’s climate plan would still mean more hurricanes, more flooding, and more suffering for me and my neighbors in the Gulf South.
That’s exactly why we’re marching, John: To push Biden to take big, bold action to stop this crisis. We know that he won’t go all the way and Congress won’t follow through unless we show up and keep the pressure on them. We’re going to show Biden what it means to reimagine and rebuild the Gulf South, following in the footsteps of the Black, brown, and Indigenous people who have been leading the fight here for centuries.
