In collaboration with AFSC, Psicólogos Sin Fronteras, APALA SD, and Border Line Crisis Center, we began providing informational sessions for migrants staying at El Chaparral. By providing updated information and legal screenings, migrants will have a better understanding of the immigration process.

The lack of clear information from both the US and Mexican government regarding asylum processing has caused frustration. These consultations have brought a sense of relief to those at El Chaparral.

The school at the encampment, "La Escuelita at El Chaparral", has come to an end after 70 days.

The three educators, Maribel, Victoria, and Evelyn, have had to flee the encampment after facing constant threats of violence for providing classes to the children. The teachers stressed that the encampment is no longer a safe place, for them or for the children. Their decision was difficult for them to make since they want the best for the children.

"We left the camp with a broken heart because our support was very heartfelt, you could say for the children and they ran out of school, but we will always return." - Maestra Evelyn

We continue to advocate for the needs of this community, and to demand that they be treated with decency and fairness.
We are happy to announce Border Line Crisis Center is now a part of our Shelter Network in Tijuana!

Border Line Crisis Center is an organization that is dedicated to working with the migrant population in transit and with deportees, providing them with temporary shelter, and psychological and legal counseling. They also provide water, food, clothing, sanitary facilities, computers and telephones.

Know Your Rights workshops are conducted at their center where accurate and up-to-date information is shared on US policies regarding the right to asylum. Border Line Crisis Center has also actively fought the countless misinformation surrounding the new policies for migrants and asylum seekers.

On this weekend, we were able to drop supplies on two routes with the support of a small but very dedicated team. One group doubled the amount of supplies that they carried in order to leave as many supplies as possible.

The supplies were used to stock up stations before the temperature climbs even higher! They were able to push deeper into those areas that get too hot for our team to reach during the summer. A large number of consumed supplies were found during this trip motivating us to continue returning to the desert and canyons. As always, we picked up trash that was found along the routes.

** How confusion around Biden policies birthed a new refugee camp on the U.S. border

"Dulce Garcia, executive director of Border Angels, a nonprofit that has been working in the camp, said she regularly gets messages from terrified camp dwellers at night. They have reported beatings and kidnapping attempts. She no longer goes to the encampment alone, she said, because she fears for her safety, and is hoping that more volunteers will start working in the camp to make it safer."

** Surge in migrants seeking asylum at nation's southern border

Migrant shelters in Tijuana are at capacity

"For the last few weeks, Garcia has been in Tijuana, giving legal counsel to migrants stuck in Mexico. Since the Biden administration ended the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) or "Return to Mexico" program in February, Garcia said she has seen a few thousand people get released into the US to complete their immigration process. But those without open MPP cases, or those subject to Title 42 (Allows the US government to expel migrants back to Mexico to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in American holding facilities) are left on the streets of Tijuana.
"They don't know what to do," Garcia explained. "They arrive at the border, asking for asylum. They get rejected at the port of entry, and they have nothing left except to cross through the desert, or in these ways we are seeing that are very tragic."
