NEW RESEARCH

One-third of LGBTQ college students faced housing disruption during COVID-19

New research from the Williams Institute in collaboration with the Point Foundation examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on educational opportunities, financial security, and housing stability for college students in the U.S., including an estimated 3.4 million LGBTQ students ages 18-40.

Results show that one-third of LGBTQ students experienced a housing disruption during the pandemic. Additionally, one-third of all students had faced financial disruption, such as the loss of financial aid, jobs, internships, support from family, or the need to get a job. Nearly two-thirds of transgender students reported that it was harder to pursue their studies during the pandemic.

FROM THE ARCHIVES
In spring 2001, Chuck Williams gave $2.5 million to UCLA Law to establish the country's first academic center dedicated to LGBT law and policy. At the time, it was the largest donation ever made to an academic institution for LGBT-focused research.

UCLA Law professor Bill Rubenstein, one of the nation's leading experts in sexual orientation and gender identity law, became the inaugural Faculty Director of the Institute—known in those days as The Charles R. Williams Project on Sexual Orientation and the Law—and Brad Sears became the founding Executive Director.
