In spring 2001, Chuck Williams gave $2.5 million to UCLA Law to establish the country's first academic center dedicated to LGBT law and policy. At the time, it was the largest donation ever made to an academic institution for LGBT-focused research.

Williams Project on Sexual Orientation and the Law—and Brad Sears became the founding Executive Director.
