Law Enforcement News LAPD Officer Injured In Crash While Responding To Chase In Jefferson Park A Los Angeles police officer was injured in a crash early Thursday morning while responding to a chase in the Jefferson Park area. Police were in pursuit of a suspected DUI driver around 2 a.m. when an officer who was trying to get to the scene ended up crashing with another car near Western Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. That car was not involved with the chase at all and it's unclear what caused the collision. Details about the officer's injuries, or that of the other driver, were not immediately available. As for the actual chase, police arrested the suspect after it ended at Venice Boulevard and Union Avenue. ABC 7 Ex-Con, 24, Is Charged In Sherman Oaks Shootout With Off-Duty LAPD Officer An ex-con is set to be arraigned June 1 on charges stemming from a rolling gun battle with an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer in Sherman Oaks that left both men injured last month. Christopher Camarena, 24, is charged with one count each of attempted murder, second-degree robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon, along with allegations that he personally used a handgun and personally inflicted great bodily injury to the officer, identified as Michael Beyda in the criminal complaint. Camarena has prior convictions in Los Angeles County in 2015 for assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm and resisting arrest and in 2017 for driving or taking a vehicle without consent, according to the complaint. The dramatic confrontation occurred about 2:25 p.m. April 28 when the officer, accompanied by a female companion, left his apartment and entered the subterranean locked parking garage of the complex on the 5200 block of Vesper Avenue, near Van Nuys and Magnolia boulevards. Police responded to the 200 block of East 29th Street near Main Street at about 8:10 p.m. on reports of an assault with a deadly weapon, said Officer William Cooper of the Los Angeles Police Department Media Relations Division. One victim was found suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene and taken to a hospital in unknown condition. The suspected shooter fled the scene in a vehicle traveling on Maple Avenue to South Main Street, Cooper said, though no description of the vehicle was provided. A letter sent to city and county leaders is urging them to provide shelter and services to the more than 200 individuals who have set up tents and structures on Venice Beach and its boardwalk park during the pandemic. The letter asserts that there is widespread anxiety over public safety, cleanliness and other quality of life issues that are contributing to deteriorating conditions on the Boardwalk. Along with asking to provide housing--the letter asks to make safety its highest priority as summer visitors begin to return. Venice Current Suspect In Custody After Man Stabbed Multiple Times In Los Feliz Neighborhood A suspect is in custody after a man was stabbed multiple times in a residential Los Feliz neighborhood and rushed to a hospital Thursday afternoon, police say. The attack was reported around 3:45 p.m. in the 2300 block of Hillhurst Avenue. It appeared the attack took place outdoors along a sidewalk. The Los Angeles Police Department says the victim was stabbed multiple times and was sent to a hospital. Police say it appears the incident involved a fight between two male transients. Officers later found the suspect in the area. The location is along a main road that leads up to the Greek Theatre and Griffith Park. Residents say they've seen a dramatic increase in crime in the area, a place popular with walkers and joggers since it's just blocks away from Griffith Park. Just a mile away, the LAPD says a homeless encampment is actually a street gang-run drug dealing hub. ABC 7 Armed Woman Barricaded In Porter Ranch Home Taken Into Custody An armed woman who barricaded herself in a home in Porter Ranch for nearly 10 hours Thursday was taken into custody. Officers were called to the 19500 block of Quail Creek Place, near Rinaldi Street and Tampa Avenue, about 7 a.m. on reports of a domestic disturbance, according to Officer Tony Im of the LAPD Media Relations Division. The woman was armed with a gun and refused to exit the residence for several hours, but eventually surrendered to police and was taken into custody at about 4:50 p.m. without further incident. No injuries were reported and no hostages were involved, Im said. MyNewsLA.com Teen Home Alone While Robbery Suspect Climbs Into Her Backyard In North Hollywood A man who led police on a chase put neighbors on edge, as he hopped nearby fences and tried to hide from law enforcement. 10th grade student Daniela Gaeta was getting ready for her Zoom English class when a suspect, avoiding the police, pulled into the driveway. Security doorbell video shows the moment when a grey Ford Fusion screeches into the driveway of her North Hollywood home. The unidentified man jumped out of the car while police sirens wailed nearby. Gaeta was home alone and immediately called 911. "I went to check and there was a car parked in our driveway, I didn’t know who’s it was so I went and checked and the man had gotten out of the driver’s side and had gotten into our backyard," Gaeta told FOX 11 News. Police managed to get her out of the house and to safety. Meanwhile, the suspect perched on the wall, made a phone call. But not long after the call, he came down and surrendered to police. FOX 11 North Hollywood Lexus Driver Arrested In Fatal Sun Valley Crash A motorist suspected of driving while impaired was arrested following a fatal crash early Thursday on the southbound 5 Freeway in the Sun Valley area, the California Highway Patrol reported. The collision, which occurred about 1 a.m. near Sheldon Street, involved a 2003 Lexus IS300 that was being driven “at a high rate of speed” and a BMW, according to the CHP. “The driver of the Lexus was unable to maintain the vehicle in its lane,” according to a CHP statement. “The left side of the Lexus struck the right side of a BMW 325i traveling on I-5 southbound south of Sheldon Street in the No. 2 lane, then veered to the right.” The Lexus crashed onto the right shoulder of the freeway, went up an embankment and overturned, the CHP reported. A 26-year-old La Cañada man who was riding in the Lexus was ejected and died at the scene. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives. The driver of the BMW, a 39-year-old Beverly Hills man, was not injured, the CHP reported. His name was not released. The driver of the Lexus, a 27-year-old North Hollywood woman whose name was not immediately released, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, the CHP reported. She suffered minor injuries. Los Angeles Daily News LAPD Investigating Robbery At Sinners And Saints Bakery The Los Angeles Police Department is looking for a suspect in a robbery at Sinners and Saints, a bakery located at 2547 Lincoln Boulevard. It happened at 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 6. The store owner said a guy jumped over her fence and threw a piece of cement through the window. The suspect took off with a cash register. "We need to do something about the growing crime in the area," said store owner Elisa Testone. "It's hard because every day I'm at war with myself as a business owner. I don't know what to do." Testone said the good news is that none of her employees were at the bakery when the incident occurred. Testone has kept her bakery open throughout the pandemic--saying she has had incredible support from the community. Venice Current Beverly Hills PD Arrests Suspected Masked Bandit Linked To 30 Burglaries The Beverly Hills Police Department Thursday announced that a man suspected in more than 30 Los Angeles-area burglaries had been arrested. According to BHPD, 33-year-old Rockim Prowell, of Inglewood, was pulled over May 2 by BHPD officers. During the investigation they found a face mask and other items that police said connected him to two residential burglaries in the city. Police said the vehicle Prowell was driving was also determined to be stolen. Prowell has been charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of grand theft and one count of vandalism. When officers conducted a search warrant at Prowell’s Inglewood home, the department said items connecting him to additional residential burglaries were recovered. Earlier on Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department put out a tweet asking if anyone had surveillance video of the suspected masked bandit. CBS 2 Fentanyl Being Sold To Minors Over Social Media, DEA Says Drug traffickers have discovered a lucrative way to expand their illicit operations to more easily reach young people by expanding their operations through the Internet. Social media has opened a door for drug dealers to entrap minors. "Many times they look for you and if you have your account public, they can have you as friends," said Kimberly Fuentes. Her best friend died from taking fentanyl pills. Regardless of age, illicit substances can be delivered to your own home, after exchanging messages on networks. "They post photos on their profile and then you see what they have," said Fuentes. "It's very easy. According to information provided by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), after sending the message through social networks, people can have the pills at home in an hour. Fake pills, advertised as supposed tranquilizers or pain medications, can contain lethal doses of the drug fentanyl. According to the DEA, marketers use keywords or "hashtags" to promote the doctored pills. When browsing social networks, using different tags or keywords, the information obtained offers medicines. However, authorities presume that many of these posts on platforms popular with young people offer adulterated pills. Undercover DEA agents are trying to stem the flow of pirated pills by pretending to be customers. "They think we are buying but in reality we are agents who are there to arrest people," highlights one of these agents. NBC 4 Public Safety News LA County Large-Scale Vaccination Sites Stay Open Despite Lower Demand Despite a recent sharp decline in demand for COVID-19 vaccines, Los Angeles County plans to continue operating its large-scale vaccination sites while also stepping up outreach efforts in communities where the inoculations have lagged, the county's public health director said Thursday. Health officials in Orange County announced Thursday that they will be closing mass-vaccination facilities due to dropping demand. Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said that while LA sites will remain open, they have been slightly downsized to “occupy a smaller footprint.” She said the county does not want to prematurely close the large-scale sites without ensuring the communities in which they're located will still have easy access to vaccinations. She also noted that the federal government could open vaccinations to youth aged 12-15 as early as next week, potentially increasing demand for the Pfizer vaccine, which has cold-storage requirements the county is equipped to meet. “So that will play into our decision as well,” she said. Here’s What The Major Reopening Means Thursday morning Los Angeles County entered the yellow tier of the state’s reopening blueprint, allowing for the broadest reopening of the economy since the pandemic began more than a year ago. Here is what you need to know: In general, reaching this level allows expanded capacity at restaurants, gyms, movie theaters, amusement parks, sports venues and museums. Bars can also reopen indoors without the requirement that they serve meals, and saunas and steam rooms can reopen. The L.A. County Department of Public Health updated its public health order and released additional information on what’s allowed now. In some cases, the county’s rules are more specific or strict than state requirements. L.A. County is the first county in Southern California to reach the yellow tier since the color-coded reopening system was established last summer. For the most part, the yellow tier allows increased capacity at many retailers and attractions. One of the biggest change involves bars. City Council Votes To Begin Process For Traqueros Monument On Windward Circle The City Council voted today to start the process of installing a monument in Venice to Los Angeles' ``traqueros,'' Mexican American railroad workers who helped build North America's first transcontinental railroad. The movement to create the monument was spearheaded by the Venice Mexican American Traqueros Monument Committee, which seeks to install a bronze statue, designed by Mexican sculptor Jorge Marin, in Windward Circle. The proposed monument has the support of the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles, the Soul of the Farmworkers Union and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta, who with the late Cesar Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee to become the United Farm Workers labor union. Huerta spoke to council members before their vote. Councilman Gil Cedillo, whose grandfather was a traquero, voiced his support for the monument, calling it ``significant for the Mexican American community.''
