So the question is... why are they breeding them?

Dear John,
In response to our campaign against the use of sea lions in zoo shows, Banham Zoo has responded publicly about their exploitation of sea lions.
The zoo has admitted that they breed California sea lions into captivity despite the fact that the animals are NOT endangered. ([link removed]) In fact, the species is doing well in the wild with population numbers increasing.
The zoo claims it keeps these animals captive to '
[build] our knowledge of how to look after these animals".
This statement once again confirms what we already know to be true - that zoos breed animals to fill their tanks and cages.
California sea lions are social animals that gather in huge colonies. In the vast ocean, they display amazing swimming and feeding techniques. The sea lions that are kept in UK zoos are deprived from displaying all of these natural behaviours. Their lives are limited to a small artificial enclosure and pool and a few other sea lions for company.
And tragically, we have exposed how many are made to perform in circus-style shows for the public:

Sea lion displays were once a typical example of the cruelty of animal circuses, but with the recent bans on wild animals in circuses coming into force, such shows have thankfully been consigned to history. However, despite wild animal performances being banned from circuses, shockingly they are still permitted if they take place within a zoo. But what's the difference?
Take Action!
