Dear John,

[ [link removed] ]Protect the identity of
the Ukraine whistleblower

The raving authoritarian in the White House threatened the Ukraine
whistleblower with torture and execution, saying "you know we used to do
in the old days when we were smart? Right? With spies and treason, right?
We used to handle them a little differently than we do now.”^1

Trump's allies reportedly offered a $50,000 bounty for revealing the
whistleblower's identity. Trump himself told reporters "we're trying to
find out" the identity of the whistleblower. As a result, the
whistleblower's lawyers say their client is scared for their life.^2

There are bipartisan calls from Congress to protect the whistleblower's
identity. But Trump could still order intelligence officials to reveal
their identity and tweet it out – putting them in immediate danger.^3
Their safety depends on Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph
Maguire doing everything he can to protect their identity.

The whistleblower complaint confirms what we already knew: Trump broke the
law and the White House covered it up. The whistleblower was crystal
clear: Trump "used the power of his office to solicit interference from a
foreign country in the 2020 U.S. presidential election."^4 The transcript
of Trump's phone call with the Ukrainian president is grounds for
impeachment by itself. But the whistleblower report puts Trump in even
more peril.

Trump demanded to meet the whistleblower and threatened consequences for
those who gave the whistleblower information. Mark Levin, one of Trump's
prominent allies in the right-wing media, went on “Fox and Friends” and
said “I want to know everything about him! I want to know what kind of
dogs they have, how many marriages they've had, if they have a DUI, if
they're a partisan, I want to know everything!” At a time when progressive
leaders like Rep. Ilhan Omar face death threats after repeated Trump
attacks, it is clear that Trump is trying to make the whistleblower – and
any others who might be thinking of coming forward – fear for their
lives.^5

Joseph Maguire could stand between Trump's mobs and the whistleblower. The
whistleblower followed federal law and demands the protection it provides.
Senators from both parties called for protecting the whistleblower's
identity. But Trump could use his executive authority to demand more
information, leaving Maguire with the final decision. Senate Democrats are
calling on Maguire to publicly pledge to protect the whistleblower's
identity – and we need to echo that demand.
