Executive Director Testifies Before Congress
On Wednesday, April 28, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Executive Director Josh Horwitz testified before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution. In the “Extreme Risk Order” hearing chaired by Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Josh explained the origins of Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) laws and shared evidence about their use as life saving tools with senators on the committee. He also made the point that Congress should support robust implementation of ERPO by developing a grant program for the states. Colorado: Making a Safer State
A discussion of CSGV’s Safer States Initiative in Colorado, working with local leaders to effect lasting change.
CSGV’s Director of Policy and Programming Jen Pauliukonis will host a discussion with Colorado Representative Tom Sullivan, Representative Jennifer Bacon, and Colorado Ceasefire spokesperson and board member Tom Mauser about how CSGV’s Safer States Initiative [[link removed]] is helping Colorado Ceasefire advocate and help pass vital new gun violence prevention legislation in Colorado. The conversation will explore how the Colorado legislature is seizing the moment to pass overdue common-sense measures to save lives. Executive Director Josh Horwitz was quoted in the Indianapolis Star [[link removed]] . “Had an extreme risk order been obtained, eight families likely might not be grieving right now,” Horwitz said.
Director of Policy and Programming Jen Pauliukonis authored a piece in the Chronicle of Philanthropy [[link removed]] . She writes, “With the White House taking bold steps, now is the time for philanthropy to do the same and vastly expand that network of support. My organization, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, offers a model for how to do that. With philanthropic backing from a new anonymous donor, we recently launched the Safer States Initiative [[link removed]] , which provides state and local activists with the financial, management, and policy assistance they need to accelerate and expand their work. So far, the effort has invested in organizations in Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin. These partnerships have allowed us to elevate leaders with local expertise who can authentically engage with the most affected communities.”
Director of Outreach and Equity Lauren Footman authored an op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer [[link removed]] . She writes, “To stem this tide of gun violence, the Mayor’s Office must truly commit to address gun violence as the public health epidemic that it is.”
Executive Director Josh Horwitz was quoted by the Associated Press [[link removed]] . “…we’re in it for the long haul. I’m confident that in 20 years, this will be almost everywhere,” he said in reference to extreme risk protection order (ERPO) laws.
