Hi John, As a mother, my biggest priority is keeping my children healthy, safe and fed. But for many moms, job losses, lack of affordable child care and other struggles brought on by the pandemic are making it hard to make ends meet. Thankfully, there are programs like the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program. It helps ensure that moms and their young kids have enough nutritious food to eat while they work on getting back on their feet. As we head into Mother's Day, Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) is organizing a WIC Week of Action to honor our hard-working moms to make WIC work better for them. You can help by urging Congress to improve WIC - send a message today! In West Virginia, where Tara and her daughter, Tymber, live, over 38,000 moms and kids are enrolled in WIC programs. This extra support helps ensure they get the nutrition they need to be healthy and strong. But right now, once a child turns 5 they can’t participate. Since most kids don't start school until 5 1/2 or 6, they can go months facing hunger. The improvements we’re asking for will help ensure kids can stay in the WIC program until they start receiving school meals in kindergarten, as well as make it easier for moms to recertify their benefits and stay in the program longer. We are also asking for WIC participants to be able to use their benefits online, since many more families find it easier to shop this way. In honor of Mother’s Day, please act to ensure moms and kids can get the food and nutrition they need. Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
