[1]Women's March

John, we’ll start
by sharing the good news: Yesterday, the Facebook Oversight Board
announced that they will extend Trump’s ban from their social media
platform.

For years, our movement has been putting pressure on social media
platforms to ban Trump and address the disinformation crisis in our
country – even when people told us it was impossible. But nevertheless, we
persisted. Together, we delivered tens of thousands of signatures until
Twitter deplatformed Trump and made sure other social media platforms did
the same.

We’re proud of the work we’ve done — but it’s clear that Trump isn’t the
only one spreading dangerous disinformation online. Marjorie Taylor
Greene, Ted Cruz, and their fellow colleagues in the Sedition Caucus have
all followed Trump’s example and rely on spreading lies through social
media to rally their supporter base.

That’s why Women’s March is proud to be one of the only organizations in
existence that trains volunteers how to combat disinformation online. From
false election claims, to vaccine disinformation — our team has been busy
developing an organizing program to address these challenges.

There are very few organizations — especially led by women — that do work
like this because it takes significant funds, planning, and resources to
run a disinformation training program. [ [link removed] ]We can’t afford to slow down on
this work: Will you chip in $3 or anything you can to fund
our Digital Defenders program so we can continue fighting back against
disinformation online?

The online disinformation crisis poses a direct threat to our democracy
and our ability to keep pushing forward in our progressive agenda.

The false narratives that Trump and his friends in Congress promote online
have real and dangerous consequences. This was made clear when Trump and
his supporters generated widespread misinformation about the 2020 election
results — leading up to an attack on the Capitol on January 6.

In addition, over the past years, Women’s Marchers have been increasingly
concerned about losing their loved ones to Q-Anon or other conspiracy
communities. They wish they had known how to talk to them with love,
compassion, and grace before they lost them for good. We know that there
is no magical solution or quick algorithm for deprogramming our peers, but
we do know that we have to intervene before there is more grief and
violence.

Since 2019, our Digital Defenders program has trained over 1,500 activists
in debunking dis/misinformation through peer-to-peer interactions on
social media. Our trainings have covered issues that are most plagued by
deliberately planted falsehoods and myths online: immigration, abortion,
climate, COVID-19, protests, and the 2020 election.

Digital Defenders are Women’s Marchers like you. Together, we’re making
sure this disinformation crisis doesn’t go unanswered and that social
media companies are held accountable for giving a platform to failed
leaders like Trump. That’s why today we’re asking our grassroots
supporters to help us raise the money we need to grow our Digital
Defenders program.

[ [link removed] ]Will you contribute $3, or anything you can, to help
fund our upcoming Digital Defenders initiatives to combat lies online
about the COVID vaccine, make sure that social media platforms take a
harsh stance against disinformation?

Keep fighting,

Women’s March
