Yesterday evening the Biden administration announced it would support the proposal from the global south to suspend patents on Covid-19 vaccines. This is huge news.

For years the pharmaceutical industry has been a powerful lobbying force around the world and has not only written global trade rules to maximise its profits, but has also dictated US trade policy over decades. The industry even unleashed an army of over a hundred lobbyists to keep the US administration opposed to the proposal to suspend patents.

But people power has won out on this occasion. The US policy to suspend patents is truly a historic moment.

With the US now supporting this game-changing proposal, it’s now going to be a lot harder for other rich country governments like the UK to stand in the way of our best chance of ensuring everyone, everywhere can access a vaccine.

As a Global Justice Now supporter you’ve played an important part in this. We’ve come together with global allies to force this issue onto the political agenda. Thank you for everything you’ve done to get us here – from signing our petition which was handed in by our US allies to President Biden last month to taking part in our global days of action. This seismic decision from the Biden administration is a watershed moment. It could be the beginning of the end of vaccine apartheid.

We are now turning our attention to other opponents of the proposal, like the UK government. We want to use the momentum from this groundbreaking development to pressure Boris Johnson to also support the proposal and by joining as a member today, you’ll help to see this campaign through to the end.
