Dear friend,
Will you take one minute to email your senators in support of First Step Act retroactivity and other sentence reductions? https://secure.everyaction.com/P74Gsb53oEmeiaxPVfl7wg2
The First Step Act was landmark legislation that made our justice system fairer and reunited thousands of families. Despite its success, the goals of the First Step Act remain unmet. Because the Act’s sentencing reforms were not made retroactive, too many people are still in prison now, serving sentences Congress overwhelmingly decided are unjust and excessive.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Ranking Member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), authors of the First Step Act, have introduced legislation which would fix this imbalance. The First Step Implementation Act (S. 1014) would close the circle and apply the First Step Act's reforms retroactively. The bill would do as its name suggests — fully implement the First Step Act.
In addition to retroactively applying sentencing reforms from the First Step Act, this bill would provide judges in future cases increased discretion to give sentences below mandatory minimums, as well as create an opportunity for people sentenced as youth to have lengthy sentences reconsidered.
The First Step Act was just a start, but we need your help to ask for the next step. Email your senators today and urge them to support this important bill. https://secure.everyaction.com/P74Gsb53oEmeiaxPVfl7wg2
Thanks for your support of all the work that we do, everywhere!
Best,
