Nearly 27 million voluntary medical male circumcisions (VMMCs) had been performed in 15 priority countries by the end of 2019, and more than 60% of the 2020 VMMC target had been reached before services were disrupted by the SARS-CoV2 pandemic, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization report. This summary of progress in scaling up VMMC services since 2008 presents modelling data on VMMC’s impact on the HIV epidemic and emphasises the need to ensure site readiness and a focus on reaching clients 15 years and older as services resume.
