ICE, which is short for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, is responsible for spreading the Coronavirus worldwide, detaining and deporting US Citizens, and forced medical procedures on immigrants under their care. Check out these headlines.
There is some good news though. President Biden has nominated Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez to run ICE. Sheriff Gonzalez is an experienced law enforcement official who sharply criticized Donald Trump’s racist and dangerous immigration policies. When elected Harris County Sheriff in 2016, Gonzalez immediately canceled a federal partnership that authorized sheriff’s deputies to enforce immigration laws, ending an agreement that had been in place since 2008.

Here’s the thing, ICE was created in the aftermath of 9/11, along with the rush for the Patriot Act and the approval of torture by the Bush administration. With its unethical, un-American track record, it’s possible there is no way to turn ICE around, but there is some hope that Ed Gonzalez can do the job.

Once confirmed by the Senate, we’re calling on Director Gonzalez and the Biden administration to clean ICE up or shut ICE down. America doesn’t need a law enforcement agency that doesn’t follow the law. Help us build the campaign by signing the petition now >>

Advocates, like Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, who have called to abolish ICE, have often stated reform was impossible “because the agency lacks adequate oversight.”

Now, once the Senate confirms Gonzalez, the agency may finally get the oversight it needs to do the job right, protecting civil rights and following the rule of law.

Time is short. The window for proving it’s possible to reform will close quickly.

Director Gonzalez will have to move quickly and take action immediately. That’s why we’re calling on Director Gonzalez and the Biden administration to work together to clean it up or shut it down now!

U.S Citizens should never be at risk of being detained and deported by ICE.

Immigrants in ICE custody must never be forced into hysterectomies or other medical procedures against their will.

And the United States should never have let ICE spread the Coronavirus around the world.

None of those things should've happened, yet they did. We’re counting on President Biden and Director Gonzalez to deliver real change, but you and I know it won’t happen unless we demand it.
