WOBURN -- The Massachusetts Republican Party is celebrating Asian Pacific American Month by honoring not just the contributions made by Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans the Republican Party, but to America as a whole.

"America would not be America without the contributions made by Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans," MassGOP Chairman Jim Lyons said. "These contributions date back generations, and we as a country owe the AAPI communities a debt of gratitude."

Lyons listed several members of the AAPI communities who've inspired him, including Korean-American California Republican U.S. Rep. Michelle Steel and Indian-American and former Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.

In 1990, it was President George H.W. Bush who officially designated the month of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Month.

"We are all Americans first and foremost, but to truly appreciate America, we must recognize and honor the contributions to our country that have come from all over the world, especially Asia and the Pacific islands," Lyons said.
