The story behind our e-card photograph:
Rahima, a young mother, washes dishes with her sister Mewa in Ethiopia.
Rahima studied electrical engineering in university thanks in part to
support (like uniforms and school supplies) she received from a Mercy
Corps program for high school girls and their mothers.

(Left) Rahima’s mother, Sophia, was able to help care for Rahima’s baby,
so that Rahima could attend school. Understanding the key role mothers
play in supporting their daughters’ education, Mercy Corps provided
Sophia with financial literacy training and a small loan, to start her
own business selling injera (an Ethiopian bread).
(Right) Rahima speaks with Taddle, her former high school math teacher,
who encouraged her to pursue a university degree. Rahima believes:
"Without education, everything is meaningless. But through education you
can create your own income. Education is very important, not only for me
but for other girls."
