People For Member,
On Bloody Sunday in 1965, then-25-year-old John Lewis was beaten nearly to
death during a march for voting rights. He was willing to put his life on
the line to preserve the freedom to vote, and he spent his congressional
career fighting to protect and expand these rights. Now voting rights are
suffering their greatest attacks since the 1960s, with more than 350 voter
suppression bills moving through 47 states, and we need your help to
prevent these awful bills from becoming law.
People For is working with national and state-level partners to support a
John Lewis Voting Rights Day of Action on May 8, and we want you to join
us! From supporting legislation that strengthens voting rights across the
country to addressing the Jim Crow filibuster, we have a lot to do to make
sure that everyone can vote safely and securely.

Although activists are working hard to fight back against local attacks on
voting rights by state legislators, there are four concrete things we need
to address at the federal level to ensure that everyone has the freedom to
vote: eliminating the Jim Crow filibuster, followed by passing the John
Lewis Voting Rights Act, the For the People Act, and the D.C. statehood
bill.
All three bills will help prevent the state legislators’ voter suppression
tactics – aimed squarely at communities of color – from taking effect, but
we need them to pass soon for that to be the case. That’s why we’re asking
you to take action locally to support these pro-voting rights efforts. And
if you participate in an event in-person, please make sure to practice
social distancing and wear a mask when you attend!
