Friend,
The Sacklers shouldn’t get away with this. The billionaires behind Purdue Pharma and OxyContin are still trying to shield themselves from accountability for the deadly opioid epidemic they helped create – but I won’t stand for it.
The Sacklers have proposed a plan that would let them get away with paying a small fraction of the wealth they amassed while pushing Oxycontin into our communities and ruining lives. It would also let the family use bankruptcy to protect themselves from future lawsuits.
Let’s get one thing clear – the Sacklers are billionaires. They are not bankrupt. The bankruptcy system shouldn’t be used to shield non-bankrupt billionaires. Especially ones that engage in deadly misconduct.
If the Sacklers get away with this, it would pave the way for other wealthy bad actors to also exploit the bankruptcy system to avoid consequences for their misconduct. That’s why I’m standing with a coalition of 25 attorneys general arguing against this unacceptable plan.
I sued Purdue Pharma and the Sacklers to get justice for the families who have been harmed by the opioid crisis. I have heard these families loud and clear – they want all of the evidence turned over and they want the Sacklers to be held accountable. They deserve justice and the public deserves the truth and transparency. No matter what tricks the Sacklers try to play, I’m not going to stop fighting. You have my word.
Thanks for all you do,
Maura
