Officer Hit By Vehicle In South Los Angeles
A police officer was struck by a vehicle Tuesday evening in South Los Angeles and hospitalized but is expected to fully recover. The officer was part of a search for a man with a gun about 9:35 p.m. in the area of Figueroa and 110th streets when the accident occurred, according to Officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department, who added the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The injured officer was taken to a hospital with stable vital signs and was expected to be fine, Im said. The name of the officer was not disclosed.

LeBron James Regrets He ‘Fueled Wrong Conversation’ About Ma'Khia Bryant
NBA star LeBron James expressed regret this week about a Twitter message last month regarding Ma’Khia Bryant, the Ohio teen who was shot dead by a police officer while appearing ready to use a knife against a woman. "I fueled the wrong conversation about Ma’Khia Bryant," James wrote on Twitter on Monday, "and I owe it to her and this movement to change it. Thank you to @fabiolacineas for educating us about Ma’Khia and her story and why this needs to be about her." James seemed to be saying he regretted sparking a conversation about the Columbus police officer who shot Bryant – rather than focusing on how Bryant came to be in such a situation. "No officer wants to take a life, but I’ll tell you one thing: That officer saved a life and he’s a hero," Los Angeles police Detective Jamie McBride told Fox News’ "The Ingraham Angle" last week, referring to James as "one of the biggest hypocrites out there."

Los Angeles Trauma Surgeon Describes Influx Of Shooting Victims; Takes Toll On Hospital Staff
The Chief of the Trauma Division at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Dr. Brant Putnam, said the hospital is experiencing an influx of gunshot wound victims in 2021. "In my 20 plus years, this is probably the busiest I've seen in terms of gunshot wound victims in particular. One of the things that have struck us is the number of violent type injuries, what we call penetrating trauma, and particularly from gunshot wounds. It is up dramatically from that first quarter. For us that means things are quite a bit busier," said Putnam. Harbor-UCLA is a level 1 trauma center in Torrance. According to statistics, the hospital has seen a nearly 87% increase in gunshot wound patients with 142 patients so far in 2021 compared to 76 during the same time period in 2020. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, homicides are up 25.8% in 2021 compared to 2020. From January 1 to May 3 of 2021, there have been 117 homicides compared to 93 during the same time period in 2020. However, the number of shooting victim cases is up 70.1%. From January 1 to May 2 of 2021, there were 478 shooting victim cases compared to 281 during the same time period in 2020.

Murder Suspect Arrested In South Los Angeles After Short Pursuit
A murder suspect was arrested in South Los Angeles Tuesday after leading police on a short pursuit and shots being fired. Ontario Police Department officers were monitoring the man before they were led on the pursuit. The man drove to a residence in the area of South Main Street and West 66th Street and barricaded himself in the backyard armed with a rifle. Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to the scene and an officer-involved shooting occurred. No one was injured and it was not immediately clear what led to the shooting. The man eventually surrendered to police without further incident and was taken into custody.

LAPD Announces Cinco de Mayo Enforcement Effort Targeting Impaired Motorists
Los Angeles police warned Southlanders on Tuesday that extra officers will be out on patrol looking for people driving while impaired on Cinco de Mayo. "Whether it is gathering with friends, visiting a local restaurant or bar, the Los Angeles Police Department encourages the public to celebrate Cinco de Mayo responsibly by designating a sober driver," according to an LAPD statement. "Don't ruin the celebrations by putting yourself and others at risk and driving impaired." The extra DUI enforcement activities Wednesday include: A traffic checkpoint from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Manchester and Budlong avenues. Additional patrols from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday in the Hollenbeck, Foothill, and Hollywood areas. Additional patrols from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday in the southeast area. The LAPD noted that in addition to alcohol, drugs may also impair, including marijuana.

Fight Breaks Out After Multi-Vehicle Crash In South LA
A fight broke out Tuesday night following a multi-car crash in the 5400 block of South Figueroa in South Los Angeles. Authorities said four vehicles were involved in the crash, including one that was overturned in the street and another overturned on the sidewalk where a pole had been knocked down. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries resulting from the crash, just two minor injuries. Shortly after the crash, two people got into a physical fight that was then broken up by Los Angeles Police Department officers. It was not immediately clear if they were involved in the crash or if they were bystanders.

Missing 14-Year-Old Could Be In Venice
A missing teenage boy could in Venice, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. 14-year-old Quinn Clifford disappeared from Los Angeles on April 16. When he was last seen his hair was dyed blue. Clifford may go by the alias name Taylor LeBous. He is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 120 pounds. He has blond hair (before dyed blue) and hazel eyes. Hollywood Actor Indicted In Ponzi Scheme Defrauding Investors Through Fake Film Deals
An aspiring actor was indicted Tuesday in Los Angeles on suspicion of running a massive Ponzi scheme that solicited hundreds of millions of dollars from investors for phony Hollywood film licensing deals, federal prosecutors said. Zachary Joseph Horwitz, who has appeared in low-budget movies under the screen name Zach Avery, was charged by a federal grand jury with multiple counts, including securities fraud, wire fraud and identity theft, the Los Angeles Times reported. It wasn’t immediately known if Horwitz has an attorney. From 2014 to 2019, Avery allegedly lied to investors to secure $690 million in loans to his film company, 1inMM Capital, prosecutors said. More than 200 investors, including three of Horwitz’s closest college friends and their family members, lost about $230 million, the Times reported. Prosecutors said Horwitz told investors that their money would be used to purchase film distribution rights that would then be licensed to platforms such as HBO and Netflix.

CHP Probing Reports Of Gunfire At Cars On Freeways
Christina Martinez Adame was driving south on the 405 Freeway near Seal Beach Boulevard on April 27 when she heard a loud boom. She said she believes her rear window was shot out. “You had glass coming into the car, the power of the wind going through. I felt like our car was caving in,” Adame, 49, said. Another motorist’s window shattered that day in the same area at about the same time, and these aren’t the only reports of similar incidents. “Every day, somebody is telling me, ‘This happened to so-and-so.’ ‘It happened to me.’ ‘It happened to another parent,’ ” said Adame, who lives in Los Alamitos. These accounts have reached investigators at California Highway Patrol offices, who are comparing notes with one another across Southern California in an effort to determine who — or what — is responsible for the damage. CHP officials say they are hesitant to alert the public about the existence of a serial shooter because while some of the damage shows tell-tale signs of bullets or BB pellets, they say there’s little evidence that those confirmed attacks are related. And in many other cases, the officials say, it’s unclear whether the damage is attributable to gunfire or simply road junk. Investigators are continuing to look for answers.

Nashville Gunman Shot, Ambushed Police Officer In ‘Setup Call,' Authorities Say
A Nashville, Tenn., police officer was shot Tuesday evening in an ambush-style attack while responding to a home where a gunman had lured officers before opening fire and eventually killing himself, police said. Officer Brian Sherman was shot in the upper left arm as he and other officers responded to a "setup call" amid reports of a woman shot inside a home in the 7000 block of Sugarloaf Drive just after 6:10 p.m. A man called 911 saying his brother shot his mother and was firing inside, police spokesman Don Aaron said. When officers arrived at the home and knocked on the door, they were met with gunfire, Aaron said. "Almost immediately, shots were fired at the officers," he said. They backed away and Sherman was given first aid by his colleagues. The gunman – identified as 22-year-old Salman Mohamed – came out of the home with a rifle and fatally shot himself in the head as officers were attempting to negotiate with him, police said. No officer opened fire at any time, police said.

‘Do Not Click On Any Links’: USPS Warns Of Fake Texts, Emails About Deliveries And Unclaimed Packages
If you receive a text message or an email that says it’s from the United States Postal Service, officials say don’t click on the link. In a written alert Tuesday, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service warned consumers that scammers are sending bogus emails known as “phishing,” and phony text messages known as “smishing,” claiming to be from the USPS. “These messages are prompting unsuspecting consumers to confirm their personal delivery information by clicking a link or downloading an attachment, that, when opened, can activate a virus and steal information such as usernames, passwords and financial account information,” the USPS alert stated. Postal inspectors said consumers should be aware that the USPS does not send send text messages or emails about unclaimed packages or delivery attempts.

Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Have Spiked In Cities Around The U.S., Study Finds
Denny Kim was walking to dinner in Koreatown in February when he was attacked. Two men approached Kim, a 27-year-old Air Force veteran, and shouted anti-Asian slurs, including “Chinese virus,” before taking a swing at him. He was left with a black eye and injured nose. “[It was] absolutely unprovoked,” Kim, who is Asian American, told KTLA-TV at the time. “I didn’t know who these guys are.” He had become one of a growing number of victims of anti-Asian hate crimes, which continue to surge in Los Angeles and around the country, a new study has found. The Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino examined police data from 16 jurisdictions across the country, finding a 164% increase in reports of anti-Asian hate crimes in the first quarter of 2021 compared with the same period last year. New York saw the greatest increase, at 223%, followed by 140% in San Francisco, 80% in Los Angeles and 60% in Boston. Some cities, including Phoenix, Seattle and Miami, reported no change. The study’s author, Brian Levin, said the jurisdictions were chosen because they have large Asian American populations and a history of collecting reliable data on hate crimes.

Fire Department Pilots Fast Response Vehicle Program On Venice Boardwalk
The Venice Boardwalk is about to see a lot more of the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). The LAFD assigned a dedicated Fast Response Vehicle (FRV) to Venice devoted primarily to the Boardwalk. The FRV vehicle, first launched by the Los Angeles Fire Department 5 years ago -- is designed to be a first--and fast responder to emergency calls. The truck carries all the equipment and medical supplies of a paramedic unit. It is also has a 300-gallon water tank with a pumping capacity. Last February, four new FRV vehicles were deployed in Los Angeles--including a dedicated truck in Skid Row. According to LAFD Deputy Chief in Charge of Operations for the West Bureau Armando Hogan -the FRV 9 dedicated to Venice is part of a pilot program to help deter fires and incidents by having a visible presence--but is also meant to explore options to see what the LAFD can do to help prevent fire in the area--and make the community safer. “We’re looking at ways of how we can be more involved. Business and residents have asked us to explore more options,” said Hogan. “What we are looking at is a pilot program to see what is working in Venice and what can work in other parts of the city.”

Here's What To Know About California's New Mask Mandate
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new guidelines for outdoor mask use for fully vaccinated Americans last week, and California finally made an official announcement Monday that it's aligning with the federal mandate, expanding the scenarios in which fully vaccinated people can go without a mask in public. San Francisco officials also fell in line with the new guidance on Monday. “We welcome the state’s decision to adopt these common-sense guidelines and we hope it further incentivizes people to get vaccinated as soon as possible," Dr. Susan Philip, San Francisco's acting health officer, said in a statement. "We are going to be updating our health orders and various directives to reflect these changes. That will likely take several days. However, our local face covering order will be updated sooner.” Marin County Health Director Matt Willis also confirmed his county is adopting the state guidance. Other Bay Area counties have yet to make official announcements, but are expected to follow the California guidelines.
