The January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol was a shameful, dark moment in the story of America. And now some members of the radical right-wing are using their actions on that hateful day to launch political campaigns.
Candidates for statehouses in West Virginia, Virginia, and Michigan are running as staunch pro-Trump Republicans and using their presence at the insurrection to bolster their right-wing credentials. One of the rioters is even a candidate for Governor in Nebraska.
John, we cannot have the people who attempted to overthrow our democracy working within our government.
If they're elected, they will benefit from the powers of their offices and have larger platforms to spout conspiracy theories and racist ideology. They could shake the very foundations of our democracy by passing legislation to weaken our free and fair elections. They aren't hiding these goals either -- this is the Trump agenda, and they are its most fervent adherents.
This group of people has no love for the America that most of us do. They are a small but vocal minority. We need to do everything we can to prevent them from gaining a foothold in our political system.
