Hi Friend --

Yesterday's newsletter incorrectly named the date of the upcoming Envisioning a Green New Deal for Durham town hall <[link removed]> as March 13. The correct date for the town hall is next Thursday, *May 13, 7:00 - 8:30pm. We hope to see you there!

Imagine this:

Safe, efficient affordable housing powered by renewable energy. Reliable electric buses that connect us to the places where we learn, work, pray, and play. Good-paying jobs for everyone who wants one that help reduce pollution in our most vulnerable neighborhoods and increase our resilience to climate change.

What could be possible for Durham if a commitment to racial, economic, and climate justice guided all our decisions?

Join the Envisioning a Green New Deal for Durham <[link removed]> town hall on Thursday, May 13, 7:00 - 8:30pm, to learn more about the movement PA’s Environment and Climate Justice Action Team is building (in partnership with the Durham Youth Climate Justice Initiative, Sunrise Movement, and Sierra Club) for a just, equitable, and ecologically vibrant community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive!

April 29 Membership Meeting Follow-Ups

Thanks to everyone who joined last week’s People’s Alliance membership meeting! At the meeting, members voted to adopt a proposed grievance and harassment policy for the organization on an interim basis. The PA board is inviting feedback from members on the interim policy before the membership votes on whether to adopt a policy on a permanent basis at the next PA membership meeting. Share your thoughts via this survey <[link removed]> (link to policy included).

If you weren’t able to attend or just want a refresher, you can find the full meeting minutes here <[link removed]>.

Events and More from Progressive Partners / Durham Organizations

Catherine Coleman Flowers - WASTE: One Woman’s Fight Against America’s Dirty Secret

On Thursday, May 20, 12:00 - 1:00pm, Legal Aid of North Carolina and the Durham Eviction Diversion Program will host a virtual lecture by Catherine Coleman Flowers. This event has been graciously sponsored by the Duke Civil Justice Clinic and the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University.

Flowers will present research related to her recent book, Waste: One Woman’s Fight Against America’s Dirty Secret. A MacArthur Genius Fellow and environmental justice advocate, Flowers works to expose how inadequate disposal systems for human waste not only subject many Americans to disgusting living conditions that have resulted in the reappearance of diseases and parasites, but also work to keep them poor and criminalize poverty by subjecting them to fines, arrests, and even imprisonment.

Register in advance for the lecture on Zoom here. <[link removed]> For those interested, copies of Waste may be purchased at a significant discount at the Gothic Bookstore by telephoning 919-684-3986.
