Biden’s American Families Plan Is Not What Women Need

Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and the pursuant school closures, working moms are exhausted and overworked. As many as 1.5 million working moms have dropped out of the workforce. So when President Joe Biden promised to come to the rescue with a shiny new $1.8 trillion package called the American Families Plan, it sounded nice. The proposal offers the prospect of lower child care costs, more paid family and medical leave, “free” preschool, and “free” community college. While the status quo could and should be improved, the American Families Plan would move women backwards.

Americans’ Trust in Media Is Broken

Americans’ trust in the national news media is low and getting worse. A new study by Media Insight Project funded by The Associated Press and the University of Chicago found bedrock journalism values are respected less by much of the general public than other competing moral values. A mere 11% of Americans fully support all five of the journalism values tested. Mainstream journalism has lost the respect of much of the public, though soul-searching and changes by the industry could reverse this trend.

Is the Inclusion of Transgender Athletes in Women's Sports Unfair?

Recently, the NCAA affirmed its commitment to allowing transgender athletes to compete on women’s athletic teams. Many critics, including former Olympic champion and transgender woman Caitlyn Jenner and tennis legend Martina Navratilova, argue that the inclusion of male-bodied athletes in women’s sports is unfair.

Can you identify which of the following statements is not true?
A. Federal law requires schools to provide equal athletic opportunities for males and females.
B. Without separate men’s and women’s sports, female athletes wouldn’t have the same athletic opportunities as men.
C. Allowing transgender women to participate in women’s sports won’t negatively affect athletes who were born female.

Why a Reemployment Bonus Would Be Better Than Extending Extra Unemployment Benefits

Are generous unemployment benefits contributing to the difficulty in finding workers? American Enterprise Institute economics scholar Michael R. Strain argues that generous unemployment benefits aren’t the dominant factor in the labor shortage—yet. There are some other hindrances.

Democrats’ Regressive Paid Leave Plan

The Biden administration unveiled its “American-Families Plan” and among the $1.8 trillion worth of proposals is a plan to “[c]reate a national comprehensive paid family and medical leave program." Despite widespread support for a federal paid leave program in theory, in practice the momentum for such a program falters when we start talking about how to pay for it.

Wokeness Has Come for Adoption

In a startling new report, one of the largest adoption agencies in the country announced that allowing white families to adopt Black children from the foster care system "can cause a lot of harm to children of color." As part of its "long journey toward becoming an anti-racist organization," the agency's leaders now believe a child's race should be considered "as part of the best interest determination for child placement." How the agency arrived at this backward view is worth understanding.
