Read what is at stake at this election on Thursday 6th May
Dear Resident,
So it’s local election time – with much at stake.
People’s don’t always think so. They think local elections don’t really affect them. But they do. Every level of local government affects how much you pay in Council Tax – your Labour Police & Crime Commissioner having just handed you the largest increase in your Council Tax of 7% this year alone. Every level of local government impacts your local roads, libraries, care for the elderly, policing – everything that matters to you and affects how you feel about your community. So that’s why I urge you to vote.
But it’s a bit complex this year in my constituency - there is a full list of who is standing where below.
Wherever you are in the constituency, I ask you to go and vote for our Police & Crime Commissioner candidate Andrew Snowdon who will bring some common sense and better budgeting to the role.
If you are in Wyre, then there are also County Council elections, with three divisions covering my part of Thornton-Cleveleys. Respected local councillors Andrea Kay, Stephen Clarke and Alan Vincent are all standing again – mainly because they have been doing such a good job over the past few years.
But they are critical if we are to prevent Labour gaining control of Lancashire, which is on a knife edge. Last time Labour ran Lancashire, can I remind you I had to fight campaigns to restore the NOW Card on the trams which they removed and to reopen Cleveleys and Thornton Libraries which they closed. Their record speaks for themselves. I will always fight to overturn poor decisions – but the best way is not to give them the chance to do the damage in the first place.
If you in Blackpool, then Police & Crime Commissioner election is all you have unless you live in Norbreck ward where there is a by-election for a councillor. Local resident Julie Sloman is standing for the Conservatives offering a welcome get-up-and-go approach for the ward, long needed in my view. A Conservative win here puts Labour on notice that they shouldn’t take the voters of Blackpool for granted – and remind them that Blackpool goes north beyond Gynn Square. Always a problem for them!
And a final bit of nonsense. If you think that Labour still haven’t quite grasped reality yet, you need only to have watched Sir Keir Starmer on BBC Breakfast yesterday. After admitting he had undergone ‘unconscious bias training’ which is designed to reduce people’s prejudices which they may not be aware of, he then went on to say ‘it would be no bad thing’ if the rest of us had to undergo it to.
Really? Is that what Labour think of the people of Britain?
Andrea Kay - Cleveleys East - Lancashire County Council
Stephen Clarke - Fleetwood West & Cleveleys West - Lancashire County Council
Alan Vincent - Cleveleys South & Carleton - Lancashire County Council
Julie Sloman - Norbreck - Blackpool Council
Andrew Snowden - Police & Crime Commissioner - Lancashire
Yours faithfully,
Paul Maynard MP
