Building Back Better Starts Right Now

"It's not enough to aim to return to a pre-pandemic normal that was unjust, unhealthy, and unstable for so many,” says Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune. “As President Biden has called for, we must build back better by reorienting our economy around clean energy, care work, and uprooting racial and environmental injustice.

"We have a rare, precious opportunity to make that happen."

Biden’s First Hundred Days: Where Do We Go From Here?

President Biden has been in office for just over a hundred days. “From his first day in office, Biden has taken meaningful steps to tackle our country’s compounding, interconnected crises: a global pandemic, a long-overdue reckoning with racism and systemic inequity, a democracy under attack, the climate crisis, mass unemployment, and economic inequality,” says Sierra Club president Ramon Cruz.

Now we have to keep the pressure on, until we get solutions as big and interconnected as the crises we face.

17-Year Itch

When Sierra Club writer and editor Heather Moyer moved to the Baltimore area 17 years ago, everyone was talking about the 17-year cicadas that would soon be showing up en masse. “Having grown up in the Midwest, I thought cicadas just came out every year,” Moyer says. “You can hear their endless buzzing during the dog days of summer—it almost makes the days hotter. But why would this year be any different? Why was everyone freaking out?

“Then I saw them.”

Sierra Club Wins Public Lands, Climate Fight Near Bryce Canyon

Following a decade-long legal battle, a federal district court in Utah has ruled in favor of the Sierra Club and its allies in challenging a proposed coal mine expansion in southern Utah. Located less than 10 miles from Bryce Canyon National Park, the Alton Mine expansion drew more than 200,000 public comments in opposition, more than any coal mine in US history.

"This was a grassroots win for the climate, public lands, and wildlife habitat,” says Sierra Club Senior Attorney Nathaniel Shoaff.

Who Has the Right to Breathe Clean Air?

The climate crisis is amplifying a public health emergency that is playing out in the very air we breathe. More than four in 10 people in the United States breathe polluted air, and the right to clean air is increasingly out of reach for people of color and people living in poverty.

A Kids’ Book That Redefines Being an American Outdoors

Growing up in India, Ambreen Tariq formed many of her fondest memories outdoors, wandering in gardens, going on picnics, and taking family road trips. Her relationship to the outdoors was upended when her family emigrated to Minnesota. But when she was 10, her parents took her on an excursion that reawakened her love for the natural world. Now, 30 years later, Tariq is the author of Fatima’s Great Outdoors.

The Thin Red Line

Joye Braun of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe writes that last month’s decision by the Army Corps of Engineers to allow oil to keep flowing through the Dakota Access Pipeline perpetuates the climate crisis and violates tribal sovereignty. “It’s time for the Biden administration to make good on its promises to ‘get it right,’” writes Braun.

Rise and THRIVE

The THRIVE Act would build on President Biden's American Jobs Plan to deliver a bold recovery package that's aligned with the Green New Deal and rooted in justice. Protect Workers’ Rights

All workers deserve the right to unionize and advocate for better wages, fair benefits, and safe workplaces. But over the past several decades, workers’ rights have been subject to unrelenting attacks. Now workers are organizing around new legislation, the PRO Act, that would protect their right to bargain collectively for better working conditions. Earlier this year the bill passed the House; now it's up to the Senate to follow suit.
