October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month đź’ś

Guns and domestic violence are a deadly combination, and we need to talk about it. Every day, about 3 people are shot and killed by an intimate partner, and 54% of mass shootings are related to domestic or family violence. Data shows women are uniquely vulnerable to gun violence perpetrated by men in their lives. What we know:

A woman is shot and killed by a current or former partner every 16 hours.

When there is a gun in a home with a history of domestic violence, there is a 500% higher chance that a woman will be murdered.

In 2016, one out of every three women murdered in America was killed by an intimate partner with a gun.

BOTTOM LINE: We must do more to ensure that violent abusers never get their hands on a gun .

There’s one solution sitting before Congress now. Back in April, the House reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The legislation includes a lifesaving provision to close the deadly “ boyfriend loophole ,” which allows convicted domestic abusers and stalkers to access guns. Yet, the Senate has refused to bring the legislation to a vote. The NRA lobbied Congress hard against this measure. It’s been 6 months — we need the Senate to do right by survivors! Please take a moment to urge your senators to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act! [[link removed]]

We Delivered 150,000 Petitions Challenging the NRA’s Tax-Exempt Non-Profit Status 💰

After months of collecting your signatures, we filed a formal complaint to the IRS demanding an investigation into the NRA’s tax-exempt nonprofit status. Nonprofits are meant to serve the public interest, but it's increasingly clear the NRA operates to do one thing: sell as many guns as possible to make the gun industry rich. We’ve had ENOUGH of the NRA using its money to stop our President and his allies from passing common-sense gun reform. Read more [[link removed]] and share on Facebook . [[link removed]]

Brady Legal Celebrates a Win in West Virginia!

This week, a West Virginia district court upheld an important gun safety law. The court ruled that the federal law that makes it unlawful for gun dealers to sell handguns and ammo to people under the age of 21 is constitutional. Back in April, Brady Legal filed an amicus brief in the case. We highlighted evidence-based research that supports the age-restriction on firearm sales and outlined why the restriction did not infringe on any constitutional rights. We’re proud to work to defend reasonable gun regulations around the country. Learn more about Brady Legal.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we would like to honor survivor and advocate Kate Ranta [[link removed]] . Nearly seven years ago, Kate was shot at point blank range by her estranged husband in front of their 4-year-old son. She’s t urned tragedy into triumph [[link removed]] (⬅️plug for her new book!) by testifying before Congress, working with gun violence and domestic violence prevention groups, and sharing her story with the world. Send a tweet thanking Kate for her courage and advocacy . [[link removed]]

Brady Quote of the Week

“The NRA has continuously expanded its lobbying arm...The organization now acts almost solely to protect the interests of the gun industry, putting profits over people. It’s time that this trade association masquerading as a social welfare organization is unveiled for what it truly is.”

— Brady President Kris Brown on our formal complaint to the IRS [[link removed]]
