Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell knows that if he can stonewall legislation that would ban partisan congressional gerrymandering and convince other folks in his party to follow suit, elected leaders like him can manipulate the maps for another decade.

It’s why we’re not surprised he and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy cited so-called possible “voter fraud” as one of their main concerns with the For the People Act. McConnell and McCarthy must believe their blatant mischaracterizations and unsubstantiated theories will be enough to sink bipartisan support for this bill.

But here’s what McConnell and McCarthy don’t understand: we have a grassroots movement that will fight back against their disinformation campaigns and attempts to undermine our democracy.

With amendments being filed on the For the People Act, we expect to see more unsubstantiated attacks -- that’s why we extended our fundraising drive to help combat the disinformation campaigns being waged by top leaders of the Republican party. When a previous version of the For the People Act was passed by the House in the last Congress, McConnell refused to even put it up for a vote. Now that 83% of voters support this bill -- including 73% of Independent voters and 74% of Republican voters -- McConnell is attempting to tank support for this bill by spreading lies. And he’s not alone.

Vice President Mike Pence recently published an op-ed in a conservative blog that spread falsehoods about the For the People Act. And two of his party’s most extreme and partisan members -- Marjorie Taylor Greene and Madison Cawthorn -- followed Pence’s lead and parroted lies as well.
