John,
In our movement we ask for the help we need and, if we’re able, we give what we can to those who need it. It may seem obvious and simple, but it's the glue that holds our world together.
You know what I mean because you’ve seen it too, especially over the last year: when our government abandoned us as COVID hit, we turned to each other and found the support we all desperately needed: we fed each other, clothed each other, helped our neighbors make next month’s rent.
But as millions are getting vaccinated and some of us are finding work again or receiving financial aid, we know exactly who is getting left behind, and why. Our undocumented community continues to fall through the cracks. In fact, an estimated 4 in 5 of undocumented immigrants work in essential jobs that put them at risk of catching COVID-19, and are more likely to feel economic consequences because they fear that reaching out for help will result in detention, or deportation.
We have a duty to show up for our community and make sure no one gets left behind. The Sunrise Dallas and New Orleans hubs are stepping up to support undocumented immigrants and marginalized groups who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis. Your support, no matter how small, can make the difference between someone having a roof over their heads or having food on the table.
We set a goal of raising $30,000 in support of undocumented volunteers. Donate here to help us reach our goal.
Your contribution will be used to support an undocumented volunteer who has a family to support and can’t meet the monthly bills. It will support someone who has emergency medical bills, has lost their job or had hours reduced. Your support is direct mutual aid to fulfill these needs.
I know many of us are struggling to get by. If you can’t spare money, spare a couple of minutes and share the GoFundMe page on social media to get the word out and help the Sunrise Dallas and New Orleans hubs raise $30,000 to support undocumented volunteers. And if you or someone you know needs assistance, fill out this form to apply.
The only way out of the crises we face is through deep love and solidarity. Thank you for giving what you can.
Rogelio
